The first generation of Pokémon were the Pokémon that started it all. The first to be introduced, the first fans interacted with in the games and anime, and the first to be merchandised. As such, Generation I Pokémon have an extensive amount of merchandise, old and new, and often hard to find. Collecting a Pokémon from Generation I can be a little overwhelming, especially if it's a particularly heavily-merchandised or popular Pokémon, but even the rarer merchandise can be somewhat easier to find than equivalents in Generation II and Generation III.

Generation I also contains some of the most popular Pokémon, including Eevee, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Charizard, Arcanine, Vulpix, Ninetales, Gengar, Ditto and Snorlax. It also contains the most heavily-merchandised Pokémon, Pikachu.
